Vimes’ Boots

Flo Collier’s enery production and consumption for 2024

“So, if you want to benefit from saving energy and generating it, you pretty much have to invest in it yourself; that’s Vimes’ Boots.“ Adrian Campbell and Florence Collier reflect on their own retrofit and explain why the political narrative should really be about investing in decarbonisation technologies as a means to tackle energy poverty, not about getting to net zero carbon (NZC) by 2050: zero bills, not zero carbon.

“Yes, there are millions of homes needing upgrading. Yes, the investment method and ownership model to do this would need sorting. Yes, it will take time to scale. But those are all readily solvable and we should at least start and do the things that make real sense: invest in saving people energy, generating more from the sun (that’s free if you need reminding), and connecting that energy source to a bloody big battery to store energy to get towards zero bills.”
